Dunnedin - a rest and a cycle out to the Albatross Preserve

We rented bikes at Dunnedin's Cycle Surgery - a bargain at 20 NZ a piece and these were top notch bikes. We made our why out onto the Otago Pennisula.

The great Royal Northern Albatross has a wingspan up to 3.3 meters. At these time of year, the parents swoop off into the ocean skies in search of food. They leave the fledglings unattended in the nest. We did not see any of the larger birds while in Dunnedin, though this is one of only two places in the world where the 20,000 of these birds are found. They are endangered, of course, by man made plastics.
