Doubtful Sound Odyssey

We get up early and then head over to the public wharf where
New Zealand's "Real Journies" has our bag lunches waiting... We board a boat which takes us west across lake Manganuii to the Manganuii power station and then take a tour bus 2 kilometers down into the generating station of the Manganui Power Facility.

The weather is dreary at first - they get about 30 feet of rain a year here. While it is grey, it had rained all the previous night and there were these magnificent waterfalls running down the rock faces from the runnoff - and any of these spectacular falls would have been an attraction all their own any place else - but not in this place - its so much bigger than that.

This shot was taken at the back end of the Lake Manapouri tour boat.

This shot was taken deep in the bowels of the generating station. Interesting - the first turbines were designed by Alis Chalmers but after installation it was determined that these were not as efficient as possible. The turbines were remodeled in Switzerland using a 1/8 scale model and then the new design from GE -Canada were used to retrofit the originals.
