Tauranga and Mt Maunganui, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand

Mount Maunganui is a beautiful stretch of white sandy beach at Tauranga on the East Coast, just south of Coromandel - which is very popular with the surfers. The unique thing about it is the available amenities just off the beach on a service route. When we visited a high school age life saver competition was underway.

Notice the swimmers runnng up the beach: they'd done a run, then a swim around a bouey, then back up the beach.

Following this pleasant stop we finished up this day by driving down to Rotorua.

The area is known for its Geo Thermal activity. We spent the evening at the Grand Motel with a side trip to a Maori Hengi, which is a banquet in which the food is cooked over coals in the ground.
