The Tongariro Crossing

After an early morning start we make our way upwards, with quite a crowd.

There are only two rest stations, one at soda springs (out houses) and the outer at tekehaiti hut.

The Red Crater is spectacular. Hot venting is still occurring at the top of the crater.

As the day progresses the light reveals the vivid colours of the volcanic rocks.

The blue lake and emerald lakes add a spectacular splash of colour.

Towards the second half of the hike, the vistas become expansive and breathtaking

Lake Taupo is clearly visible in the distance as we look north

We arrived at the Discovery Lodge Late, but they had one room left for us. The shuttle bus to the mountain was to depart at 6:40 AM. The hotel concierge had prepared us a bag breakfast and bag lunch - a good bloke who would run the crossing, forget about hiking it.
The trip takes about 8 hours. Much of the track is boardwalk or installed steps, an they keep improving it.

There are dangerous scree sections.

Towards the end of the trek, the landscape changes markedly to lush forest.

At the end of the day, the shuttle bus will pick you up, it does return trips every half hour til 4:30.
