Getting into Queenston was by far the toughest drive in from Wanaka

We took route 89 as opposed to route six. We traveled through the carnagan valley, a ski area, easy enough in fall but I can imagine the problems in winter. They have pull offs where chains can be added to your tires.

Coming into Queenston the highway travels down a very steep mountainside with very many switchbacks and hairpin tours. We were very glad to have gained the valuable driving experience before arriving at this point.

After two hours in Queenston we had purchased enough "souvenirs" and our tickets for the doubtful sound tour ( very dear 'nuff said") and started our drive to Manipui, near Te Anau where we would embark on an eight hour cruise and tour.

There is quite a mixture of nationalities. As you might expect, very many german nationals buying the accommodations as business, very many asians in the service jobs, many of the tour operators run monopolistically.
